THE ROOM & THE FOOD:
The Veranda Restaurant serves meals from morning to night in a comfortably elegant French brasserie type setting. You can dine inside in their dining room or out on the terrace. The terrace, patio area is quite large and overlooks the golf course. I have had both breakfast and lunch here but not dinner, as yet. Golfer's eat early usually ordering "the ExpressScramble" and head out to the course so the rest of us can enjoy a breakfast that is as delicious as it is relaxing. The breakfast menu offers selections from granolas, muesli (it is a spa after all!), fresh fruit, Norwegian smoked salmon to the usual fare of pancakes, waffles, frech toast and a variety of egg dish presentations. They even offer smoothies. I ordered the La Jolla Healthy Breakfast made with egg whites and my favorite shitake mushrooms, wilted greens, tomatoes and with a grilled vegetable hash. It was really very tasty and quite filling.
We sat outside on the patio for lunch and the staff were very efficient in moving their large shade umbrellas around to accomodate and protect us from the sun's direct rays. It was quite a hot day but we enjoyed a great breeze. Their lunch menu presents appetizers, their Veranda Classics, lunch entrees and even pizza. I ordered The Veranda Chicken Salad that included haricot vert, mushrooms, bell peppers, pine nuts all tossed in an apricot vinegrette. The dressing was a perfect compliment to the food. The chicken was moist and the beans crisp. Ken ordered the Rancho Bernardo Inn Angus Burger, cooked medium, with french fries (at every opportunity). I almost didn't get to taste his burger he enjoyed it so much. Those fork fights over the french fries are getting ugly and we really need to cut that out in public at least. Both selections were well prepared, very tasty and satisfying. Really good in other words!
THE SERVICE;
The Rancho Bernardo Inn is a very elegant and classy establishment and it shows in the service they offer. Breakfast orders were taken promptly and when stragglers joined our group their orders were taken quickly without any errors. Lunch was quite busy and the service a little slower but certainly nothing to complain about. As I mentioned it was a hot day and gratefully our water glasses were filled as soon as they were empty. The Litmus test for me when it comes to rating the service is simple. If there is something I need and I look up to catch the eye of a staff member I expect that contact to happen in seconds, not minutes, with the server at my side shortly, with a smile, asking what he or she can do for me. The staff at "The Veranda" can do that.
COMMENTS:
As I mentioned before The Rancho Bernardo Inn is a very nice place to visit and to eat. You can't go wrong here. It offers a relaxing and elegant atmosphere. You feel like you have gotten away.
